Margaret River Mouth

Margaret River Mouth, Rivermouth Road, Prevelly, Western Australia, Australia

This 500 m long beach is partly protected by reef. In summer the river is isolated from the ocean and its shallow, calm pool is a popular place for families with smaller children. In winter, the Margaret River swells and breaks through to flow into the ocean.

When the ocean waves get to be over 1 m, they become hazardous to swimmers because they dump and a rip forms against the southern rocks. The beach is patrolled by Surf Lifesaving on Sundays in summer. There is a pretty walk trail following the river upstream. The river is also suitable for canoeing.

The beach breaks are a favourite surf spot for kids and beginners under the right conditions. Toilets (disabled/wheelchair access) and showers are available at the car park.
